This Happened. is a series of nine dances that explore the dynamics of friendship: friendship between dancers, friendship between choreographer and dancer, and friendship between women. In a non-linear fashion, the dances spring metaphorically from a poem by C.K. Williams entitled This Happened that describes a young woman who allows herself to fall from a fourth floor window. The dances explore moments of hesitation and decision, both individually and collectively. The evening includes solos, duets and group dances, and features quiet gestural pieces as well as athletic post modern dances. Some pieces feature movement in and around a complex architectural space of large white walls and cubes. Other pieces include the spoken word and projected text. This Happened. utilizes both taped music and live percussion by Mike Robbins, sets by Ernie Avila, lighting design by Kuo Lung Kai and video by Carol McDowell.
