Festival Mission:
The mission of Dance Moving Forward Festivals (DMFF) is to produce the work of Los Angeles-based choreographers who engage contemporary dance in rigorous intellectual investigations. Each year, a number of dance artists are selected by a panel of experienced regional advisors to present new work in the festival performances. In addition, the festivals offer special workshops, lectures and panel discussions with local artists. The festival takes a new theme annually and asks choreographers to create work with that theme in mind. Past themes include: Body as Text, Body : Image, Defining Dance, The Object of Dance, The Architecture of Dance, and Ways of Thinking About Ways of Moving.

In the last three years, DMFF has taken a new focus by providing collaborative opportunities for dance artists. Girls Are Funny (2006), The Black Dress Movement (2007) and The Arianne MacBean Ballets (revisited) (2008) are the outcomes thus far of this fresh approach. In this new mode, DMFF encourages deeper connections between Choreographers, Lighting Designers, Composers, Set and Costume Designers, and of course dancers and community members. This is a significant change for DMFF. In this way, the DMFFestivals further the mission of Dance Moving Forward by continuing to pursue new ways of engaging with dance and to providing opportunities for sustained, in-depth connections between dance artists and the communities in which they live and work.
