black dress

The Black Dress Movement was presented in May 2007 as part of the Silver Lake Film Festival in conjunction with Oakwood School and Dance Moving Forward. It was a deeply collaborative project. As Choreographer, I worked closely with Music Composers, Ethan Gruska and Ivan Johnson, as well as with Photographer Dyanne Cano, Visual Artist Karen Dunbar and Dancer/Video Artist Eliza Pfister. The one-night-only event was held at Rec Center Studio in the historic Eagle Rock Jensen Rec Center building.

This piece was a pivotal one in my career. The concept came to me when I went back to work after having my daughter in 2006. I wanted to create dances for my company again, but I was also committed to teaching and nurturing my new role as a mother. I had creative ideas but I did not want to express them at the expense of the other areas of my life. This work was the first, and probably only, time members of my dance company performed along side students and colleagues from Oakwood School as well as moms from my moms support group. In The Black Dress Movement, the different and often-times conflicting spheres of my world came together. My roles as artist, teacher, colleague, and mother came together in a series of protest dances about expression and silence. In my artistic life, the performance of The Black Dress Movement was the most rewarding and moving I have ever experienced.
