"The Arianne MacBean Ballets" premiered at Highways Performance Space in August 2000 and were later presented as part of "Still Life - with Movement" at Electric Lodge in January 2001, as well as at Dance Emotion in Freiburg, Germany in July 2001. This series of short "ballets" engage issues of ownership and performative identity. The Ballets expose the mechanisms working within the system of dance making. This dance theater work explores the stage as a site where the performer empties and refills herself in an elusive spectacle. The Ballets explore the institution of dance and the politics of the body with raw conceptual movement, spoken word and music. Featuring the virtuosic talent of Elizabeth Hoefner, former dancer with Garth Fagan Dance Co. and popular Los Angeles D.J. John Wyatt, The Ballets expose the relationships between choreographer, performer, theater space, audience and dance critic.
